Councillor’s proposal lands him in trouble
SHAH ALAM: A Shah Alam City councillor’s proposal to ban all forms of gambling activities in the state capital has earned him the wrath of his party boss.
Councillor Ang Leng Kiat made the proposal at the meeting last Friday but it did not go down well with DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng when it was published in a Chinese daily.
Lim said action would be taken against Ang for making the suggestion.
Ang said he respected Lim and there was nothing he could do if the DAP strongman wanted to take action against him.
He insisted that the proposal was made in his personal capacity as a councillor, and should not be viewed as one coming from the DAP.
He said the information was leaked to the newspaper and he “just confirmed it” when the reporter called.
The 37-year-old businessman cited the negative social impact caused by gambling when he made the proposal which included a ban on 4D outlets.
“These people even go to the extent of borrowing money from loan sharks and end up in big trouble,” he said.
However, Ang said his proposal also did not go down well with the financial committee and the city council.
“I wish to apologise to the DAP for causing unnecessary anxiety to the party,” he said.
With this, Ang hoped that the matter would be put to rest.
